Sydney is a sprawling metropolis, and its local government is divided into several municipalities or local government areas (LGAs), each responsible for managing services and infrastructure within its boundaries. As of my knowledge cutoff in January 2022, here are some of the key municipalities in the greater Sydney region:

  1. City of Sydney: Encompassing the central business district (CBD) and surrounding suburbs, the City of Sydney is the main local government area for the city center.

  2. Inner West Council: Covering areas to the west of the CBD, Inner West Council includes suburbs such as Newtown, Balmain, and Marrickville.

  3. Waverley Council: Located in the eastern suburbs, Waverley includes popular areas like Bondi and Bronte.

  4. Randwick City Council: Also in the eastern suburbs, Randwick covers areas like Coogee and Maroubra.

  5. Northern Beaches Council: Encompassing the northern coastal suburbs, this council includes popular beaches such as Manly and Palm Beach.

  6. North Sydney Council: Covering the northern side of Sydney Harbour, North Sydney is a hub for business and residential areas.

  7. Parramatta City Council: Situated in the western part of Sydney, Parramatta is a major business and commercial center.

  8. Sutherland Shire: Located to the south of Sydney, Sutherland Shire includes suburbs like Cronulla and Miranda.

  9. Ku-ring-gai Council: In the northern part of Sydney, Ku-ring-gai covers areas like St Ives and Gordon.

  10. Canterbury-Bankstown Council: Formed by the amalgamation of Canterbury and Bankstown councils, this LGA is in the southwest of Sydney.
